Headers drop to 0-5 with loss to Medford in Cape Ann Tourney

GLOUCESTER — The Marblehead Magicians boys hockey team lost to Medford, 4-2, in the consolation game of the 2025 Cape Ann Savings Bank Holiday Hockey Tournament on Saturday night.

“I just told the team, if we can play with the intensity and the desperation that we have in the last five minutes of a game, and we carry that through for a full 45 minutes, we’ll be better off,” said Marblehead head coach, Brendan Locke. “We’re working hard, but we have to work a little harder to find the back of the net.”

Medford got on the board quickly. After picking up a turnover at the defensive zone, Medford’s James Camuso raced through the neutral zone before firing the puck over Marblehead goalie Bowden Laramie’s glove to give the Mustangs the advantage less than three minutes into the hockey game.

Marblehead’s defense was able to keep the Medford attack at bay, blocking shots and keeping the Mustang offense pinned to the wall.

The game’s first powerplay would be awarded to Marblehead and carried over through the first intermission. The Header man advantage unit failed to pounce on either end of the penalty time as Medford held the line to keep the score 1-0 early in the second.

Marblehead would go on the penalty kill twice in the middle frame, with penalties of charging and hooking awarded to Alex Salem and Ryan Frary respectively. The defensive special teams came up big both times, keeping shots to a minimum and forcing the puck out of the zone.

However, after giving up a slew of big chances, the puck would find the back of the Marblehead net while Laramie recovered his lost stick, sending the Headers to the second intermission down 2-0.

Marblehead co-captain E.J. Wyman and junior forward Eddie Pilicy came inches away from halving the deficit with a two-on-none opportunity early in the third period, but Medford netminder Rowan Maywalt came up with the save to maintain the two-goal lead.

Comuso would score his second of the night on a back post deflection with just over three minutes to play in regulation, tipping home a rebound to seemingly salt the game away.

The Headers’ fight was not fully extinguished, however, as Holden Ferreira ripped a shot into the roof of the net for his maiden varsity score, trimming the lead back to two goals just 12 seconds after Comuso’s second goal.

After Medford scored an empty netter, Marblehead’s Ryan Angilly was credited the first goal of his high school career, getting a stick on the puck in the midst of a wild netfront scramble to make the final tally 4-2 in favor of the Mustangs.

With a pair of losses in the holiday tourney, the Headers drop to 0-5 on the season. Marblehead’s keeper, Bowden Laramie, was named to the all-tournament team, finishing with an 0.885 save percentage over the two games.

The Headers will face-off with the Pembroke Titans away at 11 a.m. on Wednesday before returning to Gloucester to take on the Fishermen in a non-conference matchup on Saturday at 6 p.m.
