Revolutionary Marblehead in spotlight tonight on PBS

Marblehead plays a key role in tonight’s episode of Ken Burns’ new documentary, “The American Revolution,” on PBS-TV, starting at 8 p.m.

“The Marblehead mariners and John Glover feature extensively in episode 3 (airing tonight) from the evacuation of Long Island to their action on Manhattan, and the Christmas crossing of the Delaware,” said Jordan Lawrence for PBS.

“Marblehead also featured in episode 2 which aired last night,” Lawrence added. “John Glover (actor Josh Lucas) has a voice in episode 4 and Elbridge Gerry (actor Tracy Letts) has a voice in episode 5.”

Given Marblehead’s pivotal role in the Revolution, people around town are watching the Burns’ series with keen interest, including Lauren McCormack, executive director of the Marblehead Museum.

“It was fun to see Washington’s Headquarters (aka Longfellow House) and his time in Cambridge included in episode 2, because we know Glover and many Marblehead soldiers spent time in Cambridge with the new army,” McCormack told the Current. “I hope this documentary will help excite the town for all the events we have coming up in 2026 to commemorate the 250 anniversary of the war.”

The six-part, 12-hour documentary explores the country’s founding struggle and its eight-year War for Independence. The Cabot Theater in Beverly is airing it for free. It can also be viewed on PBS HERE.
