The state Fire Marshall’s Office tells the Current it is joining the investigation into a fire in a bathroom at Star of the Sea Church during Mass this morning. A fire was reported in the same bathroom last Sunday, Sept. 21, according to a social media post by EMT Tyler Merullo.

Someone attending today’s mass, who asked not to be identified, said the sacristy, in the back of the church, filled with smoke, prompting the mass to end and the building to be evacuated.
Reached for comment, Marblehead Fire Chief Jason Gilliland said, “I can’t comment on an active investigation.”
This is a developing story. Stay with the Current for updates.
