Board of Health to discuss ‘complexities’ of trash strike

Marblehead’s Board of Health is amending its meeting agenda for Thursday night to “discuss the complexities of the trash strike” and options open to the town. BoH Chair Tom Massaro is inviting residents to come ask questions or share thoughts. The meeting is held at the Mary Alley Building, 7 Widger Rd. It can also be joined remotely HERE.

Marblehead’s Public Health Director Andrew Petty sent a Code Red (phone) message to residents Tuesday evening, urging them to bring their recycling back inside or to the Transfer Station. Petty said replacement workers for Republic Services will be focusing on trash removal this week.

Republic’s union workers have been on strike since last week. They are asking for better wages and benefits in their new contract.

“We are aware that many streets have not had their curbside trash collected,” Petty said Tuesday. “We have given the missed-street list to Republic Services and they will continue to work on that list, as well as continuing with weekly collection.”

Petty said residents should put their trash out for pick-up on their normal day. He also reminded people that the Transfer Station is open to all Marblehead residents during the strike. The entrance is now on Green Street.

The Transfer Station collected about 26,000 pounds of trash on Tuesday alone, according to Massaro.

The Republic strike is impacting about 400,000 residents in several North Shore communities.
