TRASH TALK: Tuesday evening update on strike

Marblehead’s Public Health Director Andrew Petty sent a Code Red (phone) message to residents Tuesday evening, urging them to bring their recycling back inside or to the Transfer Station. Petty said replacement workers for Republic Services will be focusing on trash removal this week.

Republic’s union workers have been on strike since last week. They are asking for better wages and benefits in their new contract.

“We are aware that many streets have not had their curbside trash collected,” Petty said Tuesday. “We have given the missed-street list to Republic Services and they will continue to work on that list, as well as continuing with weekly collection.”

Petty said residents should put their trash out for pick-up on their normal day. He also reminded people that the Transfer Station is open to all Marblehead residents during the strike. The entrance is now on Green Street.

Meanwhile, Congressman Seth Moulton, who represents Marblehead, stood with the striking workers in Peabody this morning, handing out donuts.

“I’m proud of our sanitation workers,” Moulton posted to Instagram. “We have to stand together and tell companies like Republic we’re just asking for a fair deal for the hard work they do every single day.”

The Republic strike is impacting about 400,000 residents in several North Shore communities.
