Marblehead Public Health Director Andrew Petty says trash and recycling collection will resume Wednesday morning, despite striking workers at Republic Services. Several communities across the North Shore have been impacted by the work stoppage.
“Republic Services will have crews available to provide curbside trash and recycling collection in Marblehead effective Wednesday July 2,” Petty wrote in an email to the Current. “Crews will collect the Tuesday route on Wednesday, the Wednesday route on Thursday, the Thursday route on Friday and the Friday route on Saturday. Their crews will be working on July 4th.”
Republic union workers remain on the picket line Tuesday evening, but the company says it will pull in laborers from elsewhere. The union workers are asking for better wages and benefits.
Trash and recycling were canceled in Marblehead on Tuesday due to the strike. The Transfer Station was opened to all residents for the day.
“We apologize for the inconvenience and difficulties this situation is causing,” Petty said. ‘We appreciate your support and patience during this challenging time.”
