On Friday, more than 100 people gathered at Abbot Hall for Marblehead’s fourth annual Juneteenth celebration. They watched as community members spoke and high school students recited poetry about the struggles of being Black in America.

At the end of the ceremony, Lynn teacher Martina Campbell sang the Black National Anthem, and Police Chief Dennis King and resident Alfred Doherty raised the Juneteenth flag over the crowd.
“I think this year’s ceremony is even more important with all the challenges that our country is facing,” said Candice Sliney, of Marblehead, who coordinated and led the ceremonies. “It was so wonderful to have many members of the community come together and make this happen.”
