Legendary vessel American Promise comes to Marblehead this weekend

The legendary sailing vessel American Promise, made famous by Dodge Morgan’s record-setting solo circumnavigation of the globe, is returning to Marblehead for a 40th anniversary celebration. The event marks four decades since Morgan’s remarkable 150-day, non-stop voyage that captured the imagination of sailors and adventurers around the world.

The homecoming celebration will take place starting on Thursday, June 5, when American Promise will dock and be honored in a weekend of public festivities, maritime education and community reflection on one of America’s greatest sailing achievements.

Built by Ted Hood in Marblehead and specifically designed for ocean endurance, American Promise became an icon in 1986 when Dodge Morgan completed his solo circumnavigation, in a then-record time for an American sailor. His journey and the vessel has since become a symbol of perseverance, innovation and maritime excellence.

“Bringing American Promise back to her birthplace in Marblehead is a full-circle moment not just for the boat, but for all who have been inspired by her journey,” said Ashley Sullivan, executive director of Rozalia Project for a Clean Ocean. “This anniversary is a celebration of our maritime heritage, the enduring spirit of exploration, and a celebration of the vessels’ important role in our mission.”

Events during the anniversary weekend include:

— Thursday, June 5, 8 p.m.: Screening of “Around Alone” at the Lee Mansion
— Saturday, June 7, 9 a.m.: Beach cleanups at Devereux and Riverhead beaches with a public trash sort to follow at Soall Bistro (195 Pleasant St.)
— Saturday, June 7, 5-7 p.m.: Cocktail party at Skaane’s House. Tickets: (bit.ly/oceansdayparty)
— Sunday, June 8, 11 a.m.-2 p.m.: Come down to the dock outside of The Landing Restaurant for the Sustainable Marblehead Harbor Fair. Take a tour of American Promise and learn about sustainable initiatives in town.
