“His record shows a lot of good work, demonstrating his professionalism in the community,” Police Chief Dennis King told the board while recommending Lunt for the position.
King highlighted Lunt’s 28 years with the department, including 17 as a lieutenant. The chief noted Lunt’s experience as a training instructor and his service with the North Eastern Massachusetts Law Enforcement Council SWAT team, calling it “a pretty significant accomplishment for any officer or supervisor.”
NEMLEC is a consortium of 46 police departments in Middlesex and Essex counties, as well as both county sheriff’s departments. Member organizations operate under an inter-agency mutual aid agreement, committing resources to assist other members to increase capabilities and capacities across the region.
The captain position involves significant administrative responsibilities including training, sex offender registry coordination, inspections and other duties that needed immediate filling due to Freeman’s unexpected retirement, according to King.
Lunt’s appointment as provisional captain took effect March 17.
