Marblehead teachers hit picket line, School Committee to speak at 11 a.m.

Hundreds of Marblehead teachers stood in front of their school buildings this morning, the first day of their strike. The School Committee has announced a press conference at 11 a.m.

A School Committee facilities subcommittee meeting scheduled for 9:30 a.m. was canceled without notice. Many students had logged on to the virtual meeting.

“They stood us up like they do to the teachers,” said MHS football player Drew Goldman, who added that most of the team had logged on. “We wanted to ask questions and find out what was happening. The School Committee was very unprofessional.”

At around 10:10 a.m., School Committee member Sarah Fox texted the Current saying, “As we are in an emergency situation due to the illegal stirke, we are commiting all of our time to all necessary to prioritize getting students back in school.”

The Marblehead Education Association is planning a 12:30 p.m. rally at Seaside Park.

A group of parents is heading to court to file an emergency injunction that would allow students to participate in athletics and other activities during the strike.
