CUZNER IN NATURE: Seal of approval

Recently I was out at the Great Pig Rocks off Devereux Beach photographing the seals. I captured this image as a local lobsterman came by hauling his traps. The seal colony out there seems to be growing larger and larger every year.

Seals, particularly harbor seals and gray seals, are common off the coast of Massachusetts. They can often be seen on rocky shores and sandbars, especially during the warmer months when they come ashore to rest and breed. Harbor seals are known for their shy nature, while gray seals are larger and more social, sometimes forming colonies like the one at Great Pig Rocks. Both species are protected under the Marine Mammal Protection Act, and their numbers have been increasing in recent years, leading to more frequent sightings along the coastline. The Marblehead Current is proud to partner with photographer Rick Cuzner. Over the past 16 years, he has taken thousands of nature photographs.
