UPDATE: Causeway reopened, and sanitary sewer overflow announced

****11:15 a.m. update: The Causeway has been reopened.

Also, Water and Sewer Superintendent Amy McHugh announced a “sanitary sewer overflow caused by the heavy rain and high wastewater flow conditions” started just before 7 a.m. this morning at Sargent Pump Station outfall, about 2,000 feet off of Marblehead Neck near Tinker’s Island.

This overflow like consists of untreated sewage.

“Avoid contact with this water body for 48 hours after the discharge or overflow ceases, due to the increased health risks from bacteria and other pollutants,” McHugh wrote in an email this morning.

Shellfish Constable Jack Attridge reported that this area will be closed to shellfishing for 21 days.

The outfall where the SSO is occurring is owned and maintained by the Marblehead Water and Sewer Commission.
