In a Jan. 2 letter to the School Committee, interim Superintendent Theresa McGuinness announced that she no longer wants to stay in Marblehead and become the district’s permanent leader. She will be leaving at the end of June.
“After considerable reflection, I’ve decided not to seek the permanent superintendent position in the Marblehead Public Schools and am moving forward in a different direction to pursue alternative opportunities,” McGuiness wrote.

McGuinness took over as interim superintendent on Nov. 6, leaving an assistant superintendent position in Watertown. She replaced Michelle Cresta, who filled in as acting superintendent after the School Committee ousted John Buckey, without giving a reason. Cresta is back at her desk as assistant superintendent for finance and operations, but is a finalist for a job in the Manchester/Essex school district.
About a month after McGuinness arrived, she placed four Glover School educators on paid leave amid a student restraint crisis. The Marblehead Education Association, the union representing teachers, declared a “no confidence vote” in the Student Services director and associate director. McGuinness announced their resignations Jan. 1.
A Swampscott resident, McGuinness previously served as the Village School principal.
“As I have since November 6, 2023, I will work diligently and strategically alongside our leadership team and the School Committee to perform the roles and responsibilities of the interim superintendency in the best interest of the students and staff members of MPS,” her letter continued. “I am prepared to plan for and work through a successful transition to the next superintendent of schools through June 30, 2024.”
McGuinness’ announcement comes as the district begins budget discussions and teacher contract negotiations, as well as continues several investigations into student restraint policies.
