Ipswich-based Service Dog Project seeks volunteers

The Service Dog Project (SDP) is a nonprofit organization based in Ipswich dedicated to responsibly breeding, training, and donating certified service dogs to those with mobility issues. SDP is one of only two service dog projects in the country that give dogs to those in need at no cost. The vast majority of recipients are military veterans, first responders, and their families, in which the special bond between the handler and the service dog enhances the handler’s quality of life as they gain a new sense of independence. Additionally, SDP strives to serve their local community, in which their farm is a beacon for all ages, whether they be in search of community service work, a way to fill their day, or social interaction meaningfully.

SDP is currently fundraising for a renovation project that would improve the housing structures for their great danes. Not only will these updates improve the habitats of these service animals, but, if the nonprofit does not reach its goal, it may be at risk of losing its licensure. SDP is also looking for more community engagement, as every Sunday from 9 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. the farm grounds are available for volunteers to tour, help out, and, of course, give the great danes some love. No appointment or sign-up is necessary! Just a great opportunity to share your time with a deserving cause.

Moreover, the nonprofit is hoping to find volunteers who are skilled in repair work to donate their time as repairpersons on the farm to maintain the farm structures. SDP is able and more than willing to sign off on community service hours and encourages individuals of all backgrounds to give their organization a chance and see how much joy their service animals can bring you.
