LETTER: Thanks for ‘taking over’ the government for a day

To the editor:

Ladies and gentlemen,

I was a Precinct 1 poll worker this last election and I want to thank all the many voters who came out to make The People’s Will known. You were all very gracious and patient with the process. Many of you thanked us for our volunteering. Well, we thank you for showing up and taking over the U.S. and Commonwealth governments for a day, because that is what Election Day is in the United States; a scheduled revolution of government. Once again, you did a great job and I am proud to say that I could assist you in some small ways.

I would like to make an additional little shout-out to my Common Cause phone bank colleagues. Our coordinator was urgently contacting us to join an emergency effort, but I could not help because of my duties in Marblehead. My colleagues were able to contact thousands of voters in the four-corner area of the U.S. southwest to keep them informed about poll location changes and poll transportation efforts driven by flooding in the region. Unlike some of our national leaders, they have been able to identify with something greater than themselves — their neighbors, including
neighbors a thousand miles away. Great job, gang. Wish I coulda been there.
