Writers and readers open mic
Wednesday, Sept. 9, 7-8:30 p.m.
Suzanne Pinto, author of “Rowing Home,” a memoir of sailing from Europe to the Caribbean, will open the 2026-27 Open Mic Series at the Abbot Public Library. A trained psychologist, Pinto was invited to join a team of rowers for the 2,600-mile trans-oceanic journey at age 57. She will share portions of her memoir to start the evening and then the mic becomes open to readers and writers from the community for brief five-minute segments. Bookworm bookmarks
Wednesday, Sept. 9: 4-5:30 p.m.
Start the school year with a little creativity. Kids can design a beaded bookmark using colorful beads and charms inspired by books, reading and favorite stories. Space is limited to 12 kids ages 8-12, and online registration is required at abbotlibrary.org.
Sit for Peace
Thursday, Sept. 10, 6:30-7:30 p.m.
Following the community’s well-attended Walk for Peace this past May, Volunteers for Peace are inviting residents to gather once again — this time in stillness — for a Sit for Peace at Devereux Beach.
According to group organizer Ellen Petersen, the gathering will offer a simple opportunity for people to come together and sit in silence while holding an intention for peace. No meditation experience is necessary, and people of all backgrounds and traditions are welcome.
“Peace begins within each of us. When we gather with shared intention, that peace ripples outward to our families, friends and communities,” said Petersen.
The gathering will open with a few brief remarks, followed by approximately 45 minutes of sitting in silence and an opportunity for reflection and sharing afterward.
Participants should gather to the right off the playground area at Devereux Beach when facing the water and are encouraged to bring a blanket, towel, cushion or beach chair for comfort.
