Marblehead native and U.S. Rep. Seth Moulton conceded to incumbent U.S. Sen. Ed Markey on Tuesday night after a nearly 30-point defeat.
“We entered this race as an underdog and know the outcome tonight might not be what we had hoped for. We ran a race that stood on principle — that wasn’t just about politics as usual — and that elevated the voices of Massachusetts citizens who have been left behind by the status quo in Washington,” Moulton said Tuesday night. “I am proud of the race we ran, the culture our campaign built and the conversations we started. Challenging the establishment and calling for a new generation of leadership isn’t easy, but it is necessary. I will continue to push the Democratic party — and our country — to look towards the future.”
Moulton, 47, challenged Markey, 80, saying it was time for a new generation of leadership in Congress — a message that apparently did not resonate with most voters.
“Tonight is a testament to the power of the progressive movement. It is a progressive movement fueled by young people demanding more from their leaders,” Markey said in his victory speech. “Your voices are the ones we need to hear right now. Your leadership will show us the way.”
Markey will face Republican nominee John Deaton in November.
Here in Marblehead, Moulton beat Markey handily, winning every precinct. Marblehead voters chose Moulton over Markey 2,894 to 1,876, according to unofficial results from the Town Clerk’s Office.
6th Congressional District
In the 6th Congressional District race, Dan Koh of Andover has been declared the winner with 41.1% of the votes. Tram Nguyen came in second with 29.7%.
Marblehead voters supported Koh over his four challengers, giving him 2,029 votes. Nguyen finished second in Marblehead with 1,326 votes.

Governor’s Council race
Marblehead immigration attorney Diann Baylis conceded her race for Governor’s Council late Tuesday night.
“I got into this race to give voters a choice, and I’m very proud of the campaign we ran and the relationships we built through the 6th Governor’s Council district,” Baylis said. “I was particularly pleased with the results in the communities that know me best, including Marblehead.”
Marblehead voters favored Baylis over incumbent Terrence Kennedy, 3,049 to 1,108.
Of Marblehead’s 17,057 registered voters, 4,822 (or 28%) cast ballots. Nearly 15% voted early.
