4 p.m. update: Manchester-by-the-Sea Deputy Harbormaster Andrew Vanikiotis said the boat that crashed onto Grays Rock in Marblehead late Thursday night, sending six people to the hospital is based in Manchester. At least two of the vicitms sustained serious injuries.
1:30 p.m. update:
Six people were transported to area hospitals, including two with serious injuries, after a boat crashed onto Grays Rock late Thursday night, prompting a multi-agency rescue involving local police, firefighters and harbormasters.
The incident was reported at approximately 11 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 6, when the Marblehead, Salem and Beverly harbormasters responded to Grays Rock for a report of a boat that had crashed onto the rocks.
Marblehead police and firefighters responded to State Street Landing to assist with the rescue operation.
A preliminary investigation determined that six people, all adults, were aboard the boat at the time of the crash.
Two occupants were initially rescued by the harbormasters and transported by boat to State Street Landing, where they were transferred to Beauport Ambulance for transport to area hospitals.
Marblehead Fire Department personnel then boarded a Marblehead Harbormaster vessel and responded to Grays Rock to assist in rescuing the remaining occupants.
“Marblehead firefighters and the Salem Harbormaster entered the water to reach additional injured individuals outside the vessel on Grays Rock,” according to a police release Friday afternoon. “Firefighters, assisted by the Salem Harbormaster, safely secured the individuals and transferred them to a Marblehead Harbormaster boat. Emergency medical care was initiated while en route back to State Street Landing, where they were transferred to Beauport Ambulance personnel.”
The Beverly Harbormaster secured another individual involved in the crash and transported that person to State Street Landing.
The Salem Harbormaster transported two additional occupants, who were believed to have suffered minor injuries, to State Street Landing after responders confirmed that all six people involved in the incident had been accounted for.
Marblehead police officers assisted Beauport Ambulance personnel at the landing, helping secure the injured occupants and move them from the dock to waiting ambulances.
Four victims remain hospitalized, while two have been treated and released.
Marblehead Police, Fire and Harbormaster officials thanked the mutual aid agencies that assisted with the response and rescue.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation by the Marblehead and Salem police departments, Massachusetts Environmental Police and the Salem Harbormaster.
8:25 a.m. update: Marblehead Harbormaster Mark Souza tells the Current that the incident is under investigation by multiple agencies. He had no further comment.

A boating accident late Thursday night injured multiple people, sending six to the hospital, according to a statement from Marblehead Fire Department.

“Just after 11 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 6, the Marblehead Fire Department was dispatched to State Street Landing for the report of a boating accident involving multiple injured occupants. Upon arrival at State Street Landing, the Marblehead, Salem and Beverly harbormasters were already on scene. Two occupants had been rescued by the harbormasters and transported to State Street Landing, where they were transferred to awaiting Beauport Ambulance crews for evaluation and transport.
“Marblehead Fire Department personnel then boarded a Marblehead Harbormaster vessel and responded to the accident scene. Crews located a vessel that had come completely out of the water and was resting atop Grays Rock.
“Marblehead firefighters and the Salem Harbormaster entered the water to find additional injured victims outside the vessel on Grays Rock. Firefighters, assisted by the Salem Harbormaster, safely secured the patient and transferred them to a Marblehead Harbormaster boat. Emergency medical care was initiated while en route back to State Street Landing, where the patient was transferred to Beauport Ambulance.
“The Salem Harbormaster transported two additional occupants with minor injuries to State Street Landing after confirming that all individuals involved in the incident had been accounted for.
“Marblehead Police officers assisted Beauport Ambulance personnel with patient packaging and the movement of patients from the dock to awaiting ambulances.
“In total, five patients were transported to area hospitals with injuries ranging from minor to serious.
“The Marblehead Fire Department extends its sincere appreciation to all of the agencies whose coordinated response ensured a rapid and effective rescue operation.”
