OBITUARY: Nancy Noyes Foss, 76

Nancy Foss, a longtime resident of Marblehead, passed away peacefully in her sleep on Wednesday, July 8.

Nancy was born in Cincinnati, Ohio, the daughter of Edward MacArthur Noyes II and Winifred McAleer Noyes. Nancy was a 1967 graduate of Wyoming High School in Wyoming, Ohio, and Yale University in 1971.

Nancy Foss

She moved to Marblehead after college and worked for Hood Foam and the Berringer Corporation before becoming an accountant for the Marblehead school system, where she worked until her retirement in 2006.

Nancy leaves behind two brothers, Edward MacArthur “Mac” Noyes III and his wife, Cheryl, of Indianola, Washington, and James McAleer “Jamie” Noyes and his wife, Beverly, of Marblehead. She was the devoted “Aunt Nance” to six nieces and nephews, Adam, Whitney, Brian, Michael, Gregory and Sarah; their spouses, Karen, James, Mackenzie, Amanda, Lucy and Tom; and six grandnieces and grandnephews.

Nancy’s “happy place” was her family summer home on Squirrel Island off the coast of Boothbay Harbor, Maine, where she spent time during every summer of her life. More recently, she had become a full seasonal resident there and was proudly part of the “dead-enders” club of seasonal island residents who were reluctant to leave at the end of the summer season until forced off the island when the water and power were shut off at their cottages!

Nancy was a prolific reader, collecting volumes of mystery novels and was known for her crossword puzzle and trivia prowess, often completing the New York Times Sunday puzzle before most could solve their first clues. She loved gardening, painting or just sitting on her porch watching the world go by. She will be missed by her family, her Wednesday coffee group, her Friday lunch club at the Three Cod, and all those lucky enough to have known her.

A private family service will be held later this summer. In lieu of flowers, donations in Nancy’s name may be made to the Squirrel Island Preservation Foundation and mailed to: Nina Garrison, treasurer, 3 Clacton Way, South Portland, ME 04106.

Fond memories and expressions of sympathy for Nancy’s loved ones may be shared at eustisandcornellfuneralhome.com.
