The officer told her that he would document what she had told him and suggested that she reach out to the condo association, as this seemed to be more of a civil issue than anything else. The woman then told the officer that the people were due to move out at the end of this month, and the officer explained that what she had heard today seemed to be the move-out, as there was a large amount of personal property located on the first floor.

11:23 a.m. An officer spoke with a Swampscott resident who had nearly fallen for a scam involving his Marblehead bank account. The man explained that he had been using his wife’s laptop when a message about an alleged virus popped up on the screen. Shortly thereafter, a message popped up on the screen, giving him a phone number to call to get assistance from “Microsoft” to address the virus. The man had called the number and spoke with someone calling himself “Mike,” to whom he granted access to his computer. “Mike” told the many that he was going to be paid $200 as compensation for his troubles, and they used the computer to log into the man’s bank account. Instead of $200, the screen seemed to indicate that $20,000 had been deposited into his account. “Mike” then demanded the extra $19,800 back and asked the man whether he wanted to do things “the legal way” or work with him without going through formal channels. The man agreed to pay “Mike” the money back and was told he would need to write out a check for the amount and get the cash. The man went to a Marblehead branch of the bank, but when he attempted to get $19,800 in cash, he was told that branch was unable to give out such a large amount and that he would need to go to the Salem branch. Once he was at the Salem branch, he decided to check his account balance first, and he got uneasy when the additional $20,000 no longer seemed to be there. He decided to call back “Mike,” who reassured him that everything was fine and that he should go back to the bank and get the money. But at that point, the staff of the bank informed him that he had been dealing with a scammer. The man had not lost any money and had already changed his account information with the bank.

The officer also observed what looked like white paint transferred onto the purple house. A neighbor then came out and reported that he had witnessed the truck strike the house.
