For the past 150 years, Abbot Public Library has served as a cornerstone of education, community and culture for the town of Marblehead, providing free access to information, programming, technology and gathering space. Our newly renovated building has strengthened our long-standing community traditions, expanded our digital and physical collections, and supported a transformative surge in community engagement. The library’s broader programming offers a rich blend of practical knowledge, cultural and local history, and other special programs throughout the year, providing residents with unique educational and historical experiences.
Since our renovation, the library has experienced extraordinary growth in engagement and attendance in the children’s, teen and adult spaces. Children and families are enjoying the many early childhood programs as well as the innovative and recreational offerings in the Thompson Makerspace. Adults and seniors participate in various book club groups, special author events and Carten Galley exhibits.
Without an override, Abbot Public Library will face severe limitations in maintaining core services. The current town-approved 2027 budget will result in a significant reduction in services and operating hours. Residents could lose access to new books and reciprocal borrowing privileges in surrounding towns. Abbot Public Library also risks losing its state certification — a distinction held by 99% of all towns and municipalities in Massachusetts. Losing certification would cut off access to state funding, interlibrary loans and regional resource networks.
Voting “yes” on Question 1 keeps the library open, but with reduced hours and no budget for new materials. Voting “yes” on both Questions 1 and 2 together takes us back to current levels of service, and a “yes” vote on Questions 1 and 2 and 3 together allows modest budget growth to keep pace with knowledge, literacy and educational developments and trends for the benefit of the Marblehead community.
The Abbot Public Library officers of the Board of Trustees encourages Marblehead voters to support the library by voting “yes” for all three override questions (1 and 2 and 3) on the June 9 ballot.
The officers of the board remain fully committed to honoring the legacy, vision and investment of Benjamin Abbot by sustaining a library that provides lasting value through access to knowledge, shared resources and welcoming community space for all residents.
