RECREATION & PARKS: Mike McCarthy

Commercial, corporate real estate, coach

If elected, what are your goals for your term?

Hope for the best and plan for the worst. The course of the next year may be driven by the results of the override. My plan is to make decisions based upon safety, cleanliness and preservation. My goal is to make good decisions that are best for the town (regardless of funding) based on that criteria.

What skills/experience do you bring to the table?

Twenty-plus years of commercial real estate experience brokering corporate real estate, managing sales floors, underwriting investment real estate and efficiently managing properties. I have also spent years coaching Marblehead Youth Soccer, baseball and football… all which I still currently coach. My son also plays lacrosse. I am the only candidate that still has children utilizing the fields so, not only do I possess institutional knowledge, but my personal network stretches across each organization.

If there’s one thing you could change about Marblehead’s recreation programs and parks with a magic wand, what would it be?

If I had a magic wand I would magically generate enough four-season field space in town so kids in the community never had to leave to play specialized club sports. Growing up in Marblehead, I still talk to my friends about all the fun we had with town sports. I fear club sports are diluting that experience, and I fear it may take a toll on the community experience and the kid’s memories from youth sports in Marblehead.

What do you think is the biggest challenge facing Rec & Parks?

I have a few concerns but they are not fully vetted yet. The current commission has been working diligently on a variety of matters so before I answer I would need more exposure to the Department.

What’s your favorite park in town? What about your favorite recreation program over the years?

I love all of them. The fields and the recreation programs. I grew up on Evans Road, and Bud Orne was my neighborhood playground. I picked blueberries as a kid and sailed P&R from Stramski’s (my grandfather also had my aunt’s horse in a stable there); I played youth baseball at Gatchells where I currently coach baseball, football and soccer; I coach and played soccer and baseball at Village (yes, baseball); I played football, coached soccer and coach football at Hopkins; played MHS baseball and youth soccer and currently coach Babe Ruth baseball at Seaside. I also played soccer at Sevinor Field growing up which is now the lower high school field. And, Green Street, where I have played softball for 23 years. I am the general manager and league historian of the Marblehead Softball League, which was established in 1939 and is the longest standing adult league in America.
