LETTER: Marblehead’s shared commitment

To the editor:

As retired teachers who have spent decades teaching and tutoring Marblehead students, we have always believed that the true heart of Marblehead is not only our historic architecture and  our beautiful coastline but it is also our shared commitment to each other.

Whether we are attending a Marblehead Little Theatre performance, going to a plant sale or shopping locally, we are  reminded of the vibrant community spirit that makes Marblehead so special; we have built a community that many towns only dream of. Now our town is facing a significant revenue shortfall that threatens the very services and programs that define our quality of life.

On Tuesday, June 9, we will vote on a prop 2 1/2 general override. While we understand that no one welcomes a tax increase, we believe this is a necessary investment to protect  Marblehead’s future.

The proposed override isn’t just about balancing a budget; it is about maintaining the excellence of our schools, ensuring our library remains a fully staffed resource and maintaining our town’s important services. These are the foundations of the community we love and are so lucky to be a part of. Without this override, we face deep cuts that will be felt in every corner of our town — from the Council on Aging to our DPW and to public safety.

Please join us on Tuesday, June 9, in voting ‘yes’ on questions 1,2 and 3 for the override. We want to ensure that the next generation of students and neighbors can enjoy the same rich, supportive environment that has meant so much to us. Let’s invest in the town we love so that its spirit will continue to thrive for years to come.
