Schools’ preliminary budget schedule, capital requests released

Assistant Superintendent of Finance and Facilities Mike Pfifferling has released a preliminary schedule for completing the schools’ fiscal year 2027 budget.  

On Oct. 17, members of the School Committee’s budget subcommittee met with Finance Committee liaisons to answer questions about past, current and future spending.

Up next, Nov. 3, the administration will hand out FY27 budget packets to principals and program directors. Here are a few other highlights from the calendar:

Nov. 17: The district will submit its capital requests to the town

Jan. 26: Executive team will present its recommended FY27 budget

Feb. 5: The School Committee will vote whether to add a possible override to the Town Meeting warrant (agenda)

Feb. 6: The recommended budget and presentation will be posted online

Feb. 26: School budget public hearing

March 5: School Committee votes on proposed budget

May 4: Town Meeting, where residents will vote on the proposed budget and any override request

June 9: Town elections, where voters will decide override requests (if they have passed Town Meeting).

At the Oct. 17 meeting, Pfifferling announced a list of capital requests the district may submit to the town. They include:

Facilities
Brown playground shade
Glover playground refurbishment (remove boulders, leveling)
MHS cooking classroom refresh (equipment, countertops)
MHS Field House refresh (paint, padding, flooring)
MHS security alarm system refresh
Veterans School Performing Arts Center carpeting/lighting refresh
Vets flooring cracks
Vets gymnasium floor refresh
Village School field fencing
Village field structure refresh
Village sound panels in gym

Technology
Wireless access points

Rolling stock
Replace 2015 school bus, 28 passengers
Replace 2013 school bus, 14 passengers
The School Committee meets next on Thursday, Oct. 30, at 6 p.m. at MHS library and online.
