Two dozen teams entered the Festival of Arts sandcastle contest on Sunday, and the winner had everyone talking with his current events-themed sculpture called, “Trashy Fourth.”
“The trash people are on strike,” explained Ethan Goodwin as he showed off his artwork. He created a trash truck out of sand, with the word “Republic” spelled out on top with rocks. Behind the truck, Goodwin strategically placed some trash and empty cans.

Republic is Marblehead’s trash and recycling provider, and its workers have been on strike for several days.
Other popular themes at the contest included “The Village,” a group of homes and stores created from sand and rock, by Millicent Wishart, 6, Torin Wishart, 5, and Bennett Brown, 5.
Niko Kapeleris, 11, Will Luck, 12, and Ben Luck, 6, created a NASCAR racetrack out of sand. And right next to that was “Aloha Tower” by Charlie Luck, 10, and Stella Kapeleris, 8.
There were also the more traditional castles with moats and volcanoes.
Goodwin’s top prize was a basket of toys from Mud Puddle Toys in Marblehead. All the kids enjoyed ice cream treats.
