After a disappointing fog two years ago and a cancellation last year due to a barge fire, ‘Headers were rewarded Friday night with a spectacular Fourth of July fireworks display that felt like a long-awaited reunion with a beloved tradition.
Fireworks were launched from a barge at the mouth of the harbor and preceded by the “Ring of Fire” Harbor Illumination.
Crowds packed familiar vantage points along Crocker Park, Fort Sewall and Chandler Hovey Park, eager to reclaim a tradition many consider the centerpiece of summer in Marblehead. As the first golden bursts bloomed over Marblehead Harbor shortly after 9 p.m., cheers and applause rippled through Fort Beach.
Town Administrator Thatcher Kezer called it a “comeback year,” buoyed by strong community donations and volunteer efforts that helped raise around $50,000 for the display.
In 2023, a heavy blanket of fog rolled in just minutes before showtime, leaving thousands of eager spectators unable to see the colorful bursts despite the show going on as planned. While the fireworks still launched, the sky remained stubbornly gray, turning the much-anticipated display into a quiet, frustrating experience for many.
The following year brought an even more dramatic blow. In the early morning hours of July 4, 2024, a fire broke out on the fireworks barge stationed at the mouth of Marblehead Harbor. The blaze, which started around 1:30 a.m., was determined to be accidental and traced to leftover materials from a Lynn fireworks show the night before.
Just before the fireworks, the Adam Ezra Group played at Crocker Park as part of the Marblehead Festival of Arts. About 3,000 filled the park for the live concert, with families camped out on blankets and children dancing in the front row.
Earlier in the day, crowds filled the streets, visiting art exhibits, listening to live music and enjoying street performers.
