Feeling hungry? You’re in luck. Retired Marblehead firefighter Tim Doane is organizing his 14th Cooking for a Cure feast on Saturday evening at the Danversport Yacht Club.
Firefighters from eight North Shore communities will be serving their favorite firehouse meals. Some traditional favorites? Chili, corn souffle, ribs, meatball sliders, street tacos and more.
“One year, Swampscott roasted a pig in the parking lot!” Doane said.
Marblehead firefighters, including Chief Jason Gilliland, will be offering chicken soup or chicken pot pies Saturday night.
‘Big event of the spring’
This year’s participants include: Marblehead, Swampscott, Salem, Peabody, Beverly, Danvers, Topsfield and Stoneham.
“It’s the big event of the spring,” Doane said. “People come out in droves.”
Typically about 500 people attend each year, raising about $14,000 annually for the Muscular Dystrophy Association. The money helps send children with muscular dystrophy to summer camp.
“It’s a place where they can just be kids — joking, having fun, without a care in the world. It’s heartwarming,” Doane said.
Local police chiefs act as judges and offer trophies for best dish and best overall department. There is also a people’s choice award.
“These guys and gals put their heart into it,” Doane said of his fellow firefighters.
Tickets to the all-you-can-eat event are $40. Danversport Yacht Club is located at 16 Elliot St., Danvers.
