Eddie Johns opened the scoring for the Magicians to complete an eight-play drive that covered 61 yards, before he took it in from 1 yard out. Magicians bounce back, pull away from NEC rival Masco

For the first time in about three years, the Marblehead High School football team (4-1) had to respond after a loss. After Peabody stopped their winning streak at 23 games last week, the home team got back into the win column with a 28-7 win over Masconomet at Piper Field Friday night. Quarterback Miles O’Neill ran one in for a touchdown and threw for two more to Connor Cronin to ignite the offense. When it comes to head injury risk, Marblehead’s Piper Field likely safe, tests show

While it has not been tested since the summer of 2021, those test results plus subsequent suggest that the surface of Piper Field should be sufficiently soft to be deemed safe, when it comes to risk of contributing to head injuries. Prompted by the Boston Globe's recent story "Aging artificial turf fields may carry risk of head injuries," the Marblehead News filed a public records request for the past four years' of testing on Piper Field. As described in the reports, the testing is conducted by dropping a 20-pound "impacting missile" three times at 10 different locations on the field, which takes a measurement known as the GMAX. Any GMAX value greater than 200 would qualify the field as "unsafe" due to the risk that "life-threatening head injuries may occur." Meanwhile, the Syn...

After Peabody snaps 23-game streak, Football Magicians ready to make history all over again

After the Football Magicians (3-1) tied up the game against visiting Peabody at seven in the first quarter on a 2-yard run by Eddie Johns and extra point kick by Greg Motorny, the momentum changed dramatically, and not to the liking of the Marblehead fans on hand last Friday night at Piper Field. The Tanners (4-0) got that score right back before the end of the first quarter to regain the lead and then scored all of the game's remaining points to snap Marblehead’s 23-game winning streak in convincing fashion, 40-7. Eddie Johns helped Marblehead knot the score at 7-7 with a 2-yard touchdown run, but the team's Sept. 30 game was all Peabody thereafter, as the Tanners snapped the Magicians' 23-game winning streak, 40-7. Magicians rally again, set up showdown with unbeaten Peabody

For the second straight week, the Marblehead Football Magicians (3-0) won another close battle to extend their winning streak to 23 straight games. They were able to escape past host North Andover, 12-7, on Nov. 23 after beating Lynnfield in another non-league game the previous week, 26-18. In both games, they had to stage comebacks to preserve the state’s current longest run of consecutive high school football victories. After Marblehead fell behind host North Andover 7-0, Connor Cronin got the Magicians' offense headed in the right direction, returning the ensuing kickoff past midfield. MAGICIANS ROUNDUP: Field hockey coach wins 300th; strong starts for volleyball, girls’ cross country

The Marblehead High School field hockey team began a new season earlier this month with a moment etched in time. For the record, the Magicians took down Peabody, 2-0 on Sept. 6, and as a result history was made when coach Linda Rice Collins recorded her 300th career victory. Kate Bickell accounted for one of those goals from Peighton Ridge. Ridge then setup Kealy Satterfield with the insurance marker. Goalie Maggie Beauchesne collected four saves to record the shutout. Lucy Rubino played solidly on offense, while midfielders Isabelle Ferrante and Clara Donovan and defenders Emma Callaghan, Elise Burdge, Anna Bobowski and Lane Kaeyer did their part to help secure the triumph, said Rice Collins. On Sept. 8, Beverly topped the Magicians, 4-1. Sydney Hamilton broke the Panthers shuto...
