ASK LIZZIE: Helping kids cope with frustration

Dear Lizzie,  My first grader melts down when things get too hard for him and I’m finding myself doing a lot of things for him, just to avoid fallout. I know that’s not the best approach, but I don’t know how else to support him. Can you help? Hi reader, “Don’t cry, honey. I don’t want you to be disappointed. ⁣Here, I’ll get you a new one.” ⁣Have you ever heard these words come out of your mouth? Probably! You are a parent who loves your kids so much. Their hurt is your hurt. Of course, you want to make their life easier. ⁣But I want to tell you something. You don’t need to protect your child from feeling disappointed. Instead, teach them how to cope with their feelings. When we fix things for them, our children miss out on learning important coping skills. Hard feelin...

Town allocates $79K in COVID funds for bike, pedestrian plan

It will also look at ways to improve the overall environment for bicyclists in Marblehead, where narrow, winding streets and centuries-old architecture pose challenges. "This is going to be a holistic plan that really reaches into every form that might be used in a public way," said Amy McHugh, superintendent of t...

Alysa Eizenga and Trevor Radomski savor the moment and the flavor with a slice of Café Vesuvius pizza, voted as Radomski’s favorite for its overall taste during their pizza-culinary expedition through Marblehead. With Tokyo Marathon, Bontaites completes world majors quest

A lifelong athlete who played club lacrosse at Boston University, Marblehead resident AnneMette Bontaites figured that, by the time she turned 40, she would have added a marathon finisher’s medal to her trophy case AnneMette Bontaites of Marblehead shows off her Tokyo Marathon finisher’s medal and her Six Star Medal for completing the world majors. COURTESY PHOTO After that milestone came and went, one of Bontaites’ friends convinced her that it was not too late. They set their sights on the 2014 New York Marathon. Still, even if they were able to get runner’s bibs — which they did — Bontaites figured she would be “one and done” as a marathoner. How wrong she was. Last month, after she crossed the finish line at the Tokyo Marathon, Bontaites was handed a Six Star Medal, sig...

FOOD 101:  Tea — high, low, up, down and how to stir it

Centuries before our ancestors decided to toss a few tea bags into Boston Harbor, ale was Britain's national drink. From breakfast through bedtime, the bubbly brew was safer than foul drinking water. When their king married a Spanish princess, she brought her country's access to the Asian tea-growing world. Fortunes were made. The tea-drinking princess also started a custom that continues to this day. Royals, and anyone who wanted to be part of the "in" crowd, began drinking tea. (Brewing the leaves worked just as well at making drinking water safe as did brewing grains.) The habit filtered to everyday folk, further enriching tea investors.
