Seaglass Village invites seniors to summertime party

Seaglass Village invites all seniors in Marblehead, Nahant, and Swampscott to a party – a free party. Reimagining Retirement will be at the First Church Congregational (indoors), 40 Monument Ave., Swampscott, on Wednesday, Sept. 14 from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m. There will be a band, wine, soft drinks, light refreshments, some funny retirement stories, and maybe even some dancing. Best of all, the party is free and parking at First Church is abundant. Seaglass Village, one of more than 350 Villages in the United States, opened for business eight months ago. Its members, all seniors in Marblehead, Nahant and Swampscott, have been receiving volunteer services such as rides to appointments, help with household and garden chores, assistance with pesky technical questions, and friendly visits. Marblehead Historical Commission issues call out for old shop signs

The Marblehead Historical Commission is looking for old Marblehead shop signs to use in an updated Sign Museum in the basement of Abbot Hall. Museum design concept work will be starting shortly. Folks who may have a sign from a former Marblehead shop and would be willing to donate it to the Historical Commission for this project should e-mail the commission at historic@marblehead.org with one's contact information and information about the sign. A milestone year for two famous Marblehead restaurants

A summer afternoon on the deck at The Landing (Courtesy photo) It’s mid-afternoon on a sultry summer Tuesday and The Landing is packed with locals and tourists enjoying cocktails, seafood and the view of Marblehead Harbor. “This place is a landmark,” said Pat Zuchero of Swampscott, as she enjoyed a fish sandwich with a friend. “It’s great to be on a working pier and watch the fishermen. The food here is delicious and the staff is wonderful.” The Landing is celebrating its 50th anniversary this summer. Old Town House exhibit maps the history of Marblehead in the 20th century

Marblehead residents and visitors until late October can step back into a not-so-distant past and explore life in this town in the 20th century. The Marblehead Historical Commission recently opened “Mapping Marblehead: The 20th Century and Beyond” in the Old Town House. ‘Bewitched, Bothered & Bewildered’ concert set for July 16 at St. Andrew’s

Vocalists Cameron Dobson and Mary-Alexandra Onstad will perform jazz standards and sing-along music July 16 at 5:30 p.m., in an outdoor “Pops on the Plaza” concert at the Church of St. Andrew, Marblehead. Dobson and Onstad, both sopranos, will perform “Bewitched, Bothered & Bewildered” by Rodgers and Hart, as well as “I Got Rhythm” by George Gershwin, “Stardust” by Hoagy Carmichael, “I Could Have Danced All Night” by Lerner and Loewe, and other favorites. They will be accompanied by Mary Jodice, music director at St. Andrew’s. Hundreds turned out for the holiday tradition, annually organized by the Gerry 5 Firemen’s Association, Inc. Both the horrible costumes and patriotic garb were eclectic: Mermaids. Mapping Marblehead: The 20th century and beyond

The Marblehead Historical Commission will present a new exhibit at the Old Town House, 1 Market Square, beginning on July 8. "Mapping Marblehead: The Twentieth Century and Beyond" continues the Historical Commission’s project of presenting the highlights of Marblehead’s history. This is the third and final in a series of three planned exhibits. The goal is to tell the story of Marbleheadin a way that can be appreciated by all ages, encouraging residents and visitors to walk through the exhibit, and then out into the town with a greater understanding of its past. Marblehead concert offers ‘great purpose in a dark time’

There was something for everyone at the Shelter My Soul concert Saturday night. New songs from the Chad Hollister Band and some old favorites from the Deb Larkin and Jeff Stout Jazz Quintet. A sparse but enthusiastic audience was on hand in the Performing Arts Center at Veterans Middle School. The concert benefited the Lynn Shelter Association which is raising money to rehabilitate a new space for the region’s homeless in neighboring Lynn. “This concert provides great purpose in a dark time,” declared The Rev. Clyde Elledge, rector of St. Andrew’s (Episcopal) Church and cochair of the event. Abbot Public Library to display ‘Ocean of Possibilities’ art exhibit

On Wednesday, July 13, Michael Leykin will present his first directed art show. He has gathered the work of Michael Marrinan of Wellfleet, Chris Volpe of New Hampshire, Pete Hocking of Provincetown, and Todd Bonita of New Hampshire, as well as some local artists in a carefully curated collection of ocean-themed art. A public opening reception is slated for Wednesday, July 13 from 7 p.m. - 8 p.m. at Abbot Public Library’s Virginia A. Carten Gallery. The show runs through Friday, Aug. 5. A piece by artist Christoper Volpe to be displayed in Abbot Public Library. Michael Leykin comes from the North Shore and attended high school at St. John’s Prep.
