LETTER: Former teachers’ union president: Creating chaos not the way to start year

To the editor:

I am a former 20-year teacher in Marblehead and a past president of the Marblehead Education Association. My two daughters are proud graduates of the Marblehead Public Schools.

In the summer of 2020, I worked closely with Dr. Buckey to navigate the reopening of school during the pandemic. It was always a collaborative relationship with the best interest of students and staff as the main focus. As a new superintendent, Dr. Buckey listened to stakeholders and provided the district with the leadership it needed during that challenging time.

In my 20 years as a teacher in this district, we have seen more than our fair share of turmoil at the central office, which results in instability for the district. I personally do not believe that creating chaos just prior to the start of a new school year is the right direction for the students, staff or the town of Marblehead.

How will Marblehead be able to attract and retain high quality staff in the future if this is how we treat people?
