More than 250 runners laced up for the Y’s annual ‘Head to the Hill 5K recently, raising money for programming, financial assistance and scholarships that assist individuals and families in our Y and the local community.
The ‘Head to the Hill Road Race was just the first in the Y’s Road Race Series. Coming up: Fiesta 5K in Gloucester (June 22), Homecoming 5K in Beverly (August 3), River Ruckus 5K in Haverhill (September 23), Witch City 5K in Salem (October 14) and Reindeer Run 5K in Beverly (December 2). All the races are family-friendly events. Pets are welcome. Learn more about each race by visiting northshoreymca.org/programs/2023-road-races.
When school is out for the summer, the Y is in. Keeping kids and families active and engaged all summer long is what the Y does best. Sign up for fun-filled summer programs including swim, sports and gymnastics classes. There are parent/child classes for the littlest family members, plus preschool and youth lessons so every age can participate and learn new skills, make new friends and join in the fun.
There’s something for the adults too. With a variety of group exercise classes including Women on Weights, a special strength training class for women, you can stay on track with your workouts and health goals this summer. Women on Weights not only enhances muscle tone but also boosts metabolism, augments fat oxidation, strengthens bones and reduces injury risk. This female-focused class will introduce you to the fitness floor and strength training techniques that will help you meet your specific goals. Visit northshoreymca.org.

Summer camp spotlight: Gymnastics Camp staff Haley LaChance
LaChance grew up and lives in Danvers, attended Danvers High School and graduated in 2022. She has been active in gymnastics her whole life, beginning with preschool classes at age 3 and then gymnastics summer camp at the Y at age 7. Participating in competitive gymnastics with the Y for more than 10 years has created so many memories and important bonds with friends and coaches for Haley. She was also a varsity gymnast in high school. LaChance is looking forward to an action-packed summer of learning and fun with all gymnastic campers, new and old.
Finally, a special shout-out to the four amazing interns from the Transition & Pathway Program at Marblehead High School. Thank you Kenny Louis, Yuki Bunnell, Genevieve Rogers and Rose Alvarez-Dobrusin who helped the Y camp team get ready for the upcoming season by sorting camp materials, unboxing and organizing equipment and gear, as well as getting camp spaces in tip-top shape prior to the June 20 opening day. Under the guidance of Brenda Dumais and LouAnn Strangie, these wonderful students worked for about two months helping with camp prep. Kudos to the whole team at Marblehead High School!
