Marblehead volleyball begins postseason today

The Marblehead High School volleyball team is the 15th seed in Division 2, and is taking on Nashoba at home in a Round of 32 match-up today (Nov. 3). Check back for details and videos from this match here at the Marblehead News, your first source for local news 

Marblehead boys run close second to Peabody during annual NEC Meet 

The Marblehead High School boys cross-country team finished a close second to Peabody during the annual Northeastern Conference Championship Meet at Gloucester’s Stagefort Park on Saturday, Oct. 29.  

The Marblehead boys were led by Harrison Kee (16:09, second), Ryan Thompson (16:15, third) and Isaac Gross (16:18, fourth). By finishing in the top eight, all three earned All-Conference honors, according to coach Brian Heenan. 

Will Cerrutti was unable to run in the race, because of a strained calf, but was still named to the All-Conference team thanks to his regular season performance. 

“David DiCostanzo (17:18, 16th) had a tremendous kick to get us to within two points of Peabody’s winning score,” said Heenan. “Ryan Blestowe (17:27, 23rd), Gabe Bayramian (18:07, 32nd) and Errol Apostolopoulos (18:32, 37th) also ran well in the varsity race. 

Will Cruikshank (18:13, second) and Nate Assa (18:18, third) led the way in the JV race.

The varsity boys will now travel to Wrentham to compete in the Massachusetts Divisional Championship Meet on Nov. 12.

Weed enjoys more statewide successes 

During the NEC Open at the Salem Country Club on Oct. 24, Marblehead golfer Matt Weed shot an 83 to finish third. Masco’s Tyler Feldberg (81) and Jack Mertz (82) topped the ticket.

Next up was the Division 2 State Individual Championships at Maplegate Country Club in Bellingham on Oct. 25, where Weed shot a 76 four over par. His 76 earned him a tie for 16th place out of 87 players.

Patrick Ginnerty of St. Bernard’s won the state individual championship with a 68.

Field hockey ties non-league Malden Catholic 

On Oct. 26, the Marblehead High School field hockey team tied Malden Catholic, 2-2 in a non-league game. 

Peighton Ridge scored both Marblehead goals. Lane Kaeyer assisted on the first tally, while Ridge was credited with a successful penalty stroke opportunity. Goalie Maggie Beauchesne made 16 saves to help preserve the tie. 

Coach Linda Rice Collins lauded the play of Kate Bickell, Kealy Satterfield, Lucy Rubino, Elise Burdge, Isabelle Ferrante, Clara Donovan, Emma Callaghan and Anna Bobowski throughout this competitive contest.
