MAGICIANS ROUND-UP: Golfers take swing at winning record; volleyball wins marathon

Golfers breeze past Winthrop

The Marblehead golf team (7-3) took care of Winthrop rather easily at Tedesco on Sept. 28, 56-16. A total of seven players won their matches to secure the team victory.

Matt Weed (7-2), Jacob Hershfield (6-3), Charlie Grenier (7-5), Marty Ryan (8.5-.5), Jacob Aizanman (8.5-.5), Adrian Baron (7-2) and Cam Comstock (7-2) picked up those victories. Christopher Locke halved his match.

Weed was the medalist in this match, shooting a 34. Four of his teammates also broke 40, including Locke (38), Grenier (38), Ryan (38) and Aizanman (39).

Volleyball enjoys another victory

Coach Killeen Miller’s volleyball team (8-2) beat Beverly in five sets on Oct. 3.

Keira Sweetnam (20 kills) and Isabel Wabno (11 kills) led the Magicians on defense, while Tamya Johnson accounted for 25 assists.

Isabel Wabno had 14 digs and libero Caitlin Parkman tacked on another 12 also played good defensive games.

Field hockey gets tied up with Saugus

On Sept. 29, the Marblehead field hockey team tied Saugus, 1-1.

Kate Bickell was credited with the Marblehead goal assisted by Lane Kayer, who played an outstanding game, according to coach Linda Rice Collins. Goalie Maggie Beauchesne came up with two saves to help secure the point for her teammates.

The Magicians shutdown Peabody the next day to the tune of 2-0. Lucy Rubino netted the first tally from Gabby Hendy. Bickell then added some insurance with a goal assisted by Sydney Hamilton.

Neely Payne played solidly on offense in this game, according to Rice Collins. Clara Donovan and Isabelle Ferrante were the midfield gems. Emma Callaghan, James Marcey, Elise Burdge and Kaeyer stood out on defense. Beauchesne earned the shutout after making three saves.

The Magians then edged host Malden Catholic on Monday afternoon, Oct. 3, 2-1.

Hamilton scored Marblehead’s first goal of the game from Peighton Ridge. Kealy Satterfield then got the game-winner from Ridge.

Ridge, Bickell Neely and Payne Clara Gallagher all played well for the visitors.

Boys’ cross-country blows away Masco to remain undefeated

The Marblehead boys’ cross-country team (3-0) defeated Masconomet at Bradley Palmer State Park by a virtual shutout on Sept. 28, 15-47. 

The top five finishers for coach Brian Heenan’s team in this meet were Will Cerrutti (16:55, first), Ryan Thompson (16:56, second), Isaac Gross (17:01, third), Gabe Bayramian (17:37, fourth) and Harrison Kee (17:46, fifth).

The undefeated Marblehead harriers are scheduled to meet up with visiting Peabody on Thursday, Oct. 6.

Girls’ cross-country enjoys success against all competition

The Marblehead High School girls’ cross-country team competed in the Small School Division (Division 2) at the Ocean State Invitational in Warwick, R.I. on Saturday, Sept. 24.

Junior Cat Piper (23:20.7, 85th), senior captain Maya Mahoney (24:22.8, 111th), senior captain Martha Heffernan (24:27.7, 114th), senior Piper Morgan (24:27.7, 115th) and senior Saylor Caruso (24:47.3, 123rd) picked up the points for Marblehead. Seniors Anne Simcoe (25:15.2) and Devin Whalen (26:25.8) rounded out top seven varsity runners, and as a team they ended up 23rd overall.

Sophomore Abbie Goodwin (27:21.4, 37th), sophomore Sonia Miller (27:48.2, 39th), sophomore Adelyn Cruickshank (27:52.1, 41st), senior Aeryn Vizy (28:32.6, 45th) and senior Olivia Hoover (29:50, 49th) were the team’s top JV runners in this invitational meet, where they finished ninth overall.

Marri O’Connell won the freshmen race with an impressive time of 16:06 on the 4K course. Angie Fischer finished 23rd in 19:53. Grace Rowe (23:01) was 41st, and Charlie Seliger (24:02) 47th.

The Magicians then returned to the conference on Sept. 28 at Bradley Palmer State Park to beat Masco, 22-34.

Freshman Marri O’Connell (21:16) won this meet against the Chieftains. Senior captain Maya Mahoney (23:47, sixth), junior Cat Piper (23:57, seventh), senior captain Martha Heffernan (24:12, ninth) and senior Piper Morgan (24:55, 11th) also picked up the points against the Chieftains.

Senior Devin Whalen (25:51, 16th) and senior captain Isabelle Harvey (25:59, 19th) rounded out the top seven.
